Ash Wednesday marks the first day of Lent, a 40 day period of introspection and repentance. During the Ash Wednesday evening service, all are invited to come to the altar to receive the imposition of ashes. The Pastor applies the ashes in the shape of the cross on the forehead of the recipient, reminding us of our sinfulness and mortality, but also reminding us of the Good News that through Jesus Christ there is forgiveness of sin and eternal life. On Ash Wednesday the congregations of Asbury United Methodist Church and John Wesley UMC join together, with John Wesley and Asbury taking turns serving as host church.
